Story Writing Checklist

Editing Your Story Writing: Use what you know to prepare your document for marking.

1.   Title: each word begins with a capital and is underlined: The Sparkle

2.   Sentences: whether expressions or complete thoughts, they all begin with a capital and end with a punctuation mark. (check for run-on sentences that need punctuation)
3.   Spelling: use you spelling notebook to ensure that spelling rules you have learned have been applied

4.   Numbers: numbers must be number words instead of digits (seven rather than '7')

  5.   Dialogue: use the following rules whenever you have characters speaking
  •  comma after the name who is speaking and then begin the quote with a capital: Jan snarled, "The day is too cold for a picnic!"
  • begin a new paragraph when you have a new speaker:
    • "I disagree!" yelled Jonathan.
  • put the quotation marks after the quote's punctuation: ..picnic!"
