Literacy Card: from notes to a paragraph

Topic: Literacy Card

For this week's ‘Work on Writing’ task, you will complete the assignment in the classroom. Read over your notes from the Literacy card you read last week, and on the right hand side of your notebook, write a complete paragraph.

Remember to set up your page the way we always do e.g. date on the left side of the top line, leave 1-2 spaces, print the title (which is the topic of your article) in the middle (capitalized and underlined)

Expectations: You are expected to….

·       write the Main Idea in your first sentence (topic sentence)

·       write three supporting sentences providing details about the main idea

·       write a concluding sentence

·       write double spaced

·       check for capitals, period, spelling

·       edit, with a peer, using an edit sheet

·       staple your edit sheet above your paragraph (be sure not staple more than one page)

Please read over the rubric I will be using to assess your paragraph.

Reading for Information

Good morning,
Please read the Blog very carefully so that you know exactly what to do for our Work-on-Writing assignment this week. You are all developing some very good skills, so please use them throughout this assignment.

Source: Classroom Information Cards

Today, please read and record the Learning Intention and Criteria on the left-hand side of your Reading Log. You will actually complete the assignment this week in the classroom.

Learning Intention: I can identify the topic, main idea and write three supporting details.

Criteria: 1) Identify article’s topic

              2) Identify article’s main idea
              3) Record three details (short, accurate notes)
              4) Print neatly and accurately

Below your Criteria, write the following headings and then complete the task (remember, this is all completed on the left-hand side of your notebook)

Topic:

Main Idea:

Details (notes, keywords)

Task Description:

1.    Choose a card from one of our two selections of reading cards (beside the Math Center)

2.   Scan the article to get a quick idea of the content and record the topic (look at all the text features: headings, tables, side notes, pictures)

3.   Read the article carefully and record the main idea (do not record any notes the first time you read)

I look forward to reading the notes about your chosen topic.

Love, Mrs. French
