Topic: Local News



Assignment: Work-on-Understanding (part of Work-on-Writing)

Today, you will write the Learning Intention,  Criteria and the two other headings on the left-hand side of your Reading Log. You will actually complete the assignment this week in the classroom.

Learning Intention: I can identify the main idea and write three supporting details from a news article.

Criteria: 1) main idea
              2) three details (short, accurate notes)

1.   Choose an article in our local newspaper (kept in our classroom)
2.   Scan the article to get a quick idea of the content
3.   Reread the article carefully
4.   Below your Criteria, write the Main Idea of the article and then record at least three details supporting this main idea

*remember, this is all completed on the left-hand side of your notebook

Peer Editing


Good morning Grade Fives and Sixes,

Blog assignment: this week, you the Peer Conferring section of the ‘Work on Writing’ part of Daily Five

Today, please read this Blog only. This week, in the classroom, you will actually complete the assignment as described below:

With a partner, you will prepare you paragraphs for marking. Please use the checklist provided (handed out this morning) to methodically edit your paragraph.

The checklist look like this:


Paragraph Checklist #1

 

· looks like a paragraph (e.g. indented, sentences follow)

 

· sentences look like sentences (e.g. capital, ending punctuation)

 

· each sentences is a complete thought (e.g. makes sense)

 

· topic sentence (promised topic, very general idea)

 

· minimum three support sentences (details)

 

· concluding sentence (reminds us of the topic)

 

· spelling & conventions correct

 

· very clear printing or writing (letters the correct size)

 

· no erasable moments

You will read over your notes from Government and Democracy and, on the right hand side of your notebook, write a complete paragraph. (Note: if you did not complete last week’s assignment, you will need to do that first.)

Remember to set up your page the way we always do e.g. date on the left side of the top line, leave 1-2 spaces, print the title in the middle (capitalized and underlined)
Expectations: You are expected to….

·       Write a five sentence paragraph that includes

o   a topic sentence ( briefly stating the main idea of the paragraph)

o   three support sentences providing details about the main idea

o   a concluding sentence
